Biographical data on Robert Campbell, 1892.

An autobiographical "account of the early settlement of the Red River of the privations, hardships and sufferings of the first settlers, etc.--by one who was there," written by Robert Campbell at the request of the Minnesota Historical Society (handwritten, 12 pages, ca. 1892). Campbell, son of the 1819 Scottish immigrants Robert and Ann Curl Campbell, details his father's contract with the Earl of Selkirk to remain at the Red River Settlement for three years; his decision to leave after the three years, along with his wife's sister and her husband, David and Alsie Curl Tully; the circumstances surrounding the massacre of the Tullys and their baby daughter near Grand Forks and the fate of their two surviving sons; his parents subsequent settlement in Jo Daviess County, Illinois; and his own move to Dakota County, Nebraska. There are also three letters, two dealing with forwarding the manuscript to the Historical Society (undated and May 22, 1892) and one addressed to "Friend William," Emerson, Dixon County, Nebraska, containing Campbell and Tully genealogical data (undated).
